Jessie Simpson finally returns home for weekend visit
KAMLOOPS — Jessie Simpson returned to his Savona home for the first time in six years Friday (May 27). Jessie was left with life-altering brain injuries in the early morning hours of June 19, 2016 when he was in the wrong place at the wrong time — tracked down and beaten with a baseball bat while celebrating the end of high school.
“My weekend’s been fantabulous,” said Jessie. “I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful mother.”
“He got here and he was just so happy, with his friends, and hugging me,” said mom Susan, “and he asks me, ‘Can I yell?’ and I go, ‘Yes, yell, be happy.’”
Susan had to make a number of changes to her house to be able to accommodate overnight stays.
“We got the wheelchair ramp put in around the whole house. We actually took the whole deck off and redid the whole deck,” she said.
“We did the cement outside so he was able to come in. We put the new door in, we put the new floor in, redecorated. This is Jessie’s room. I have no living room anymore, it’s his room.”
The van Susan bought to transport Jessie needs maintenance, so now she’s spending hundreds a week to bring him home until she can get the van fixed.
“It’s not easy,” she said. “Somehow in the last six years, everything that we’ve needed, someone has donated, someone has helped us. That’s what I’m hoping — to be able to bring Jessie home all summer.”
Jessie says his favourite part of the weekend was seeing his beautiful mother.
“We’re lucky. We’re lucky to be together in our own home again. Never thought that would happen.”
The Simpsons have a GoFundMe to help cover Jessie’s transportation costs.
