City of Merritt releasing water from Nicola Lake Dam
MERRITT, B.C. – Water is being released from the Nicola Lake Dam in order to safely manage water levels.
“The City of Merritt works regularly with the dam operators to regulate waterflows and minimize impacts to residents,” wrote the City.
Each year, higher flows of lake water is released from the dam during freshet, which is roughly from mid-May to June.
The Dam Operator began releasing water yesterday (May 9) and it will continue through tomorrow (May 11). The City of Merritt said roughly 45 cm will be released, which is sustainable in Merritt, and will raise water levels to full banks.
“Those properties in low-lying areas near the Nicola River should ensure their sump pumps are in proper working order as groundwater levels will be high,” wrote the City. “Landowners may also want to remove any equipment or livestock away from the river banks.”
A sandbag station remains open seven days a week at the Merritt Civic Centre for those residents concerned about the safety of their properties.
