Century old North Shuswap boat recovered from the bottom of Shuswap Lake
KAMLOOPS — A 100-year-old wooden diesel-powered boat has been removed from Shuswap Lake through the efforts of a partnership between the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, Transport Canada and other government agencies.
Mandalay B was built in Vancouver in 1923 and worked along the B.C. coast until it was brought to the Shuswap in the mid ’90s. Moored off Lee Creek, it had become an icon of the North Shuswap.
In January 2022, the boat sank. Through a privately funded effort, it was recovered last June. However, just four months later, it went down again and the owners couldn’t afford to remove it from the lake.
Officials were able to lift the boat from the water May 10. It was determined the boat could not be salvaged and has been properly disposed of.
