‘On the home stretch’; City of Kamloops begins final stage of sewage upgrades, construction on Lansdowne

KAMLOOPS – Beginning Monday (Oct. 21), the Landsdowne Transit Exchange will be temporarily relocated to St. Paul Street between Fourth and Sixth Avenues, as the city begins Stage 5 of its city centre sewage upgrade plan.

According to the City of Kamloops, Lansdowne Street from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue will be closed during this stage – which is slated to be completed by Nov. 15.

During this time, motorists are encouraged to detour via Victoria Street.

This is the fifth and final stage of the City Centre Sanitary Upgrades Project that got underway last April.

“We are on the homestretch now, we’re on the last phase of the project – we’re very happy about that,” Matt Kachel, the city’s Infrastructure Delivery Divisional Manager, told CFJC News. “We’ve moved past the harder part, which was Stage 4 – that took us a bit longer there because we had some utility conflicts to deal with.”

Despite the delays, Kachel says the project is still on track for finishing by mid-November.

“Now we’re on to the last phase of the project,” said Kachel. “It does have some bigger impacts, though, with having to move the transit (exchange) to get the pipe through.”

Temporary bus stops will be accessible on St. Paul Street and, according to Kachel, there will be signage directing people where to catch their bus.

If all goes as planned, the Lansdowne bus exchange will be back up and running by Nov. 15.

“We are into a section of the project where the pipe is a little bit shallower, so we don’t anticipate any issues,” said Kachel. “We lost a bit of time on the last phase, but overall we’re still on schedule.”
