Former Blazers goaltender Daryl Reaugh recognized for work as NHL broadcaster

TORONTO — Former Kamloops Blazers goaltender Daryl “Razor” Reaugh has been recognized for his years of work as a hockey broadcaster, and will take his place in the Hockey Hall of Fame’s media section.

The 60-year-old Reaugh, who has served as colour analyst on Dallas Stars radio and television broadcasts for the past 29 seasons, is the latest recipient of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, which is presented by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.

“Daryl Reaugh has been a cornerstone of consistency and eloquence for Stars fans over decades,” Chuck Kaiton, President of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association, said in a release.

“His unique approach to painting a vivid picture as he analyses the play brings life and enjoyment for all to hear. His use of language is nothing short of sheer wizardry. He has earned his place among the best NHL broadcasters.”

Reaugh, who played 27 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers and Hartford Whalers, began his broadcasting career with the Whalers in the 1990s. Since joining Dallas in 1996, his work has led to 12 Lone Star Emmy Awards and calls from NBC, ABC, ESPN, FOX and CBC to work games on the national stage.

A second round pick of the Oilers in the 1984 NHL draft, Reaugh spent two seasons in Kamloops, and backstopped the then Kamloops Junior Oilers to the 1983/84 WHL title. In 104 regular season games in Kamloops, he put up a 70-18-1 record with three shutouts.

François Gagnon, who has covered the Montreal Canadiens for over three decades with RDS, La Presse and others, was also named as the recipient of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism.

Gagnon and Reaugh will receive their awards at the Hockey Hall of Fame’s NHL Media Awards Luncheon on Nov. 10. They’ll also be recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame as “Media Honourees” and will have plaques that will be displayed inside the Esso Great Hall alongside past award recipients.
